Fifty years of changing lives through mentorship. That’s what Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas is celebrating in Fayetteville this month. Since its inception, the local chapter has paired thousands of children with mentors who help guide them toward brighter futures.
On any given day, the office on East Spring Street buzzes with the energy of connections being formed, stories being shared, and lives being transformed. It’s here that the organization orchestrates its mission to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.
Local resident and longtime mentor, Jessica Martinez, recalls the first time she met her “Little,” 10-year-old Anthony. “He was shy at first, but over time, I’ve seen him come out of his shell,” she says, beaming with pride. “He’s become more confident and is doing better in school. I couldn’t be prouder of him.”
Over the years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has built a reputation for its positive impact on the community. The program’s success stories are a testament to the dedication of mentors like Martinez and the commitment of the organization to nurturing these crucial relationships.
According to Executive Director, Alex Turner, the nonprofit serves over 300 matches annually in Northwest Arkansas. “We often hear from Littles who are now adults, and they talk about how their Big changed their lives,” Turner says. “It’s incredibly rewarding work.”
The 50th-anniversary celebrations are not just a look back at past achievements, but a call to action. The organization hopes to expand its reach and continue making a difference in the lives of more children by recruiting new mentors.
For those inspired to join the cause, Big Brothers Big Sisters offers a straightforward process for becoming a mentor. Volunteers are thoroughly vetted and matched with a child based on common interests and goals. The organization provides ongoing support and guidance to ensure that each match is successful and meaningful.
As Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas embarks on its next chapter, the community is reminded of the power of mentorship. One relationship at a time, lives are being changed, and futures are being shaped. And in the heart of Fayetteville, that endeavor continues to flourish as it has for half a century.
