Bentonville senior center reopens after hiatus, looks for new kitchen staff

The Benton County Senior Activity and Wellness Center in Bentonville has swung its doors open once more, welcoming back a community eager for connection and care. After a temporary closure that began on February 2, the center resumed operations on March 16, though it’s still seeking kitchen staff to restore its full range of services.

Brad Bailey, the executive director of the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Arkansas, explained that the center’s hiatus was due to staffing shortages. The agency, based in Harrison, took over the management of six senior centers in Benton, Carroll, and Madison counties earlier this year. This transition from the previous operator, Our Healthy Communities of Rogers, has posed challenges, particularly in hiring enough personnel to provide daily hot lunches — a staple eagerly anticipated by the center’s visitors.

Linda Bycsek, a regular at the Bentonville center, epitomizes the sentiments of many returning patrons. While she’s thrilled to be back participating in exercise classes, she expressed a longing for the return of the center’s hot meal program. “It’s such a big part of our day,” Bycsek remarked as she finished a morning workout. “The meals bring everyone together.”

For the senior population of Bentonville, the center is more than just a place to eat or exercise. It’s a space where friendships are forged and a sense of community thrives. The chatter of card games, the clatter of exercise equipment, and the aroma of fresh coffee offer a comforting routine for many seniors.

The Area Agency on Aging is actively seeking new kitchen staff to bring the beloved meal service back to life. The hope is to find individuals who are not only skilled in the kitchen but also passionate about serving the senior community. As the center rebuilds its team, it continues to offer a range of activities that support physical and mental well-being.

Beyond the practical need for staff, the center’s reopening symbolizes a step toward normalcy for Bentonville’s senior residents. As the community rallies to support this vital hub, the sound of laughter and lively conversation is gradually returning, making the Benton County Senior Activity and Wellness Center a vibrant part of daily life once more.
