Benton County Republicans pick Austin McCollum for county judge; may see opposition in November

In a decisive victory Tuesday, State Rep. Austin McCollum secured the Republican nomination for Benton County judge, defeating Justice of the Peace Carrie Smith with 64% of the vote. McCollum, who has served in the Arkansas House of Representatives since 2017, will now forward his campaign towards the general election in November.

The unofficial vote totals showed McCollum garnering 12,266 votes against Smith’s 6,882. McCollum, at 35, brings a fresh perspective and has been recognized for his role as vice chair of the House Advanced Communications and Information Technology Committee. This Republican primary outcome sets the stage for what could be a competitive race come November, as independent candidate Taylor Sizemore has entered the fray.

Sizemore, hailing from Bentonville, has expressed his intent to appear on the November ballot by filing as an independent. However, he faces the task of collecting 2,000 valid signatures from registered Benton County voters by May 1. His successful entry would ensure a contest in the absence of Democratic candidates for the county judge position.

The role of county judge in Arkansas is significant, serving as the chief executive of county government. The position has been held by Republican Barry Moehring, who announced last July he wouldn’t seek a fourth term, leaving his current term to conclude at the year’s end. His decision opened the door for McCollum and others to vie for the seat.

McCollum’s victory in the primary underscores his appeal among local Republicans, and his campaign will likely focus on continuing the county’s growth and addressing local concerns, such as infrastructure and community development. Meanwhile, residents are watching closely to see if Sizemore can surmount the signature hurdle and present a robust challenge in November.

The absence of a Democratic contender marks a distinct political landscape in Benton County, emphasizing the sway of independent and Republican voices. As the November election approaches, all eyes will be on Sizemore’s efforts to qualify for the ballot, potentially shaping a dynamic race for county judge.
