Benton County investigating AirTag found on Lowell council member’s car

Benton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an AirTag was discovered on a vehicle belonging to a Lowell city council member.

Councilmember Emilee Reach confirmed to 5News that the tracking device was found attached to her car during the month of June. Reach represents Ward 2 on the Lowell Board of Aldermen.

A digital shadow in the town of gardens

Honestly, when you live in a place like Northwest Arkansas, you sort of expect growth to look like neon signs filling the skyline in downtown Rogers or the farmers market finally selling out of those strawberries in Fayetteville. But you don’t exactly pack your lifestyle for something like finding a micro-tracking device stuck to your undercarriage while you’re running errands in Lowell.

Look, this is the kind of thing that honestly feels like it belongs in a political thriller set in Chicago or D.C. where privacy is a luxury item you buy with the stock portfolio. Seeing it here, in our quiet little corner, where folks tend to leave their doors unlocked and watch out for one another—it’s honestly wild. It makes you pause and do a double-take.

Sheriff’s Office representatives told 5News that department detectives are currently handling the case. They are analyzing the data from the device to determine when exactly it was placed on the vehicle and by whom.

It’s a strange situation. The technology is mundane—Apple AirTags cost under $30 online—but the intent feels heavier. You can track a washer and dryer easily enough if you don’t want to lose track of it at a laundromat, but leveraging that tech to silently monitor a public servant’s movements?

We are still waiting on more details from the sheriff’s office regarding potential suspects or a timeline. For now, Reach has the peace of mind of knowing where her car is, even if she didn’t put it there.

Keep an eye on the 5News report for updates.
