Benton County circuit judge bids farewell to longtime courtroom as he prepares for move to new Justice Center

Benton County Circuit Judge Brad Karren closed the chapter on a courtroom he has called home since 2013 on Thursday, marking his final day presiding there before the county transitions to its new Justice Center next week.

The move to the new facility on Melissa Drive is set for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 30. Karren’s longtime courtroom, located in the Benton County Courthouse downtown, has seen years of cases that shaped the county’s legal landscape — from civil disputes to criminal trials. The new Justice Center promises to house modernized courtrooms and facilities designed to handle a growing caseload in Bentonville and surrounding communities.

Karren began his tenure on the bench over a decade ago, taking on the role following his election as a circuit judge. For those who’ve attended hearings or trials downtown, his courtroom was a familiar setting — one where justice mixed with a bit of Karren’s steady demeanor and familiarity with local legal complexities.

The courthouse on the Square has long been a central fixture in Bentonville’s government and justice proceedings. As Benton County has grown — alongside the rapid expansion of Northwest Arkansas — the demand for updated, more accommodating judicial facilities became clear. The new Justice Center is a response to that growth, aiming to relieve congestion in court proceedings and improve the overall experience for judges, attorneys, staff, and those coming through the justice system.

While Karren prepares to take the bench in the new building, his move highlights the broader changes underway in Benton County’s judicial system. The new facility includes multiple courtrooms, enhanced security measures, and office spaces for court personnel, reflecting years of planning and investment to support the county’s evolving needs.

Beyond the architecture and amenities, the move signals a shift in how justice is administered in Benton County, aligning with modern standards and community expectations. For locals who’ve navigated the courthouse downtown — whether for jury duty, filing cases, or attending hearings — the new Justice Center represents a tangible step forward in the county’s infrastructure.

Judge Karren’s farewell to the old courtroom is a nod to the history embedded in the walls of the Benton County Courthouse. But the future, with its promise of streamlined operations and updated spaces, is firmly fixed on the new facility opening later this month.

Work crews were seen putting the finishing touches on the exterior of the new courthouse on Thursday, signaling that the transition is imminent. After September 30, most court activities and proceedings will shift completely to the Justice Center, which aims to accommodate a growing population and caseload that stretches across Bentonville and adjacent jurisdictions.

For now, Karren’s last day in his original courtroom serves as both an end and a beginning — closing one chapter in court history downtown and opening another just a few miles away, in a building built for the next generation of Northwest Arkansas.
