Bella Vista Bypass christened as the ‘Asa Hutchinson Freeway’ by state commission

The Bella Vista Bypass, a key segment of Interstate 49, is getting a new name. The state Highway Commission voted Wednesday to christen it the “Governor Asa Hutchinson Freeway,” in honor of the former governor’s significant contributions to Arkansas’s highway infrastructure.

Asa Hutchinson, who hails from Gravette and now resides in Benton County, played a pivotal role in securing funding for the state’s highways. His plan, which was approved by voters in 2020, added $300 million annually to the state’s highway budget through gradual tax increases. This funding was critical in making the Bella Vista Bypass a reality, alongside a host of other road improvements across the state.

In a phone interview on Friday, Hutchinson expressed his surprise and gratitude over the honor. “I certainly didn’t expect this naming, but it’s an honor to have this with a highway that runs through so many places that mean so much to me: Gravette, Bella Vista, and Benton County,” he said.

The Bella Vista Bypass has long been a crucial component in improving traffic flow and connectivity in Northwest Arkansas. The completion of this segment of I-49 enhanced regional transportation, easing the commute for countless drivers who travel between Missouri and Arkansas daily. The bypass also serves as a vital artery for local traffic in towns like Gravette and Bella Vista, which have experienced significant growth in recent years.

Hutchinson’s passion for improving the state’s infrastructure was evident during his time in office. The renaming of the bypass is not just a nod to his contributions but also a reminder of the ongoing efforts to enhance transportation in the region. This move might also spark conversations about future projects, such as the proposed toll study for I-42, which is being examined as a potential funding source for further regional transportation improvements. Locals familiar with the area will appreciate the significance of the Bella Vista Bypass, not only for its practical benefits but also for its symbolic representation of progress. Asa Hutchinson’s legacy in improving Arkansas’s infrastructure seems to be inextricably linked to the roads and highways many take for granted every day. Naming a section of I-49 after him ensures that his efforts are not forgotten as the region continues to grow and develop.
