Bats cause delay in McCulloch Street sidewalk construction in Pea Ridge

Construction of the new sidewalk along McCulloch Street in Pea Ridge has hit an unexpected snag after crews discovered a colony of bats roosting in nearby trees. City officials say this discovery has delayed the project, designed to provide safe passage for pedestrians between Patton Street and East Pickens Road.

The busy stretch of North Davis Street currently forces walkers to hug the edge of the road, a situation that’s been a common complaint among residents for some time. The sidewalk was intended to improve pedestrian safety and encourage more foot traffic in an area where vehicles often dominate the street scene.

But protecting local wildlife has complicated the project timeline. The bats found near the construction zone are protected species in Arkansas, and state regulations require careful handling to avoid disturbing their habitat, especially since certain bat species are vulnerable during particular seasons.

“Because these bats are an important part of the local ecosystem and are protected, we need to adjust our construction schedule,” said a city spokesperson for Pea Ridge. “We’re working with wildlife specialists to find the best way forward that respects both public safety and environmental regulations.”

The delay means the sidewalk won’t be ready as soon as initially hoped. While no revised completion date has been firmly set, officials are optimistic that the project will resume once seasonal restrictions on working near the bats’ habitat lift.

Pea Ridge isn’t the first place in Northwest Arkansas to navigate construction challenges related to wildlife. Nearby towns have also adjusted plans when local species and environmental concerns intersect with infrastructure needs. This dynamic highlights the ongoing balance communities face as they expand and improve while staying mindful of the area’s natural resources.

The new sidewalk is expected to enhance accessibility in the neighborhood, offering residents safer ways to get around on foot, including families and seniors who’ve been discouraged from walking along busy roadways.

While the pause may be frustrating for some, it’s a small part of the broader effort to build out Pea Ridge’s pedestrian infrastructure thoughtfully. It reflects growing awareness in Benton County about incorporating environmental stewardship into everyday projects.

For now, residents walking along McCulloch and North Davis will need to stay cautious near traffic until the sidewalk is finished. City officials encourage drivers to stay alert and considerate, especially where pedestrian space remains limited.

When construction resumes, the sidewalk will run the length of McCulloch Street from Patton to East Pickens, connecting with existing paths that lead toward schools and local businesses. This project is part of Pea Ridge’s ongoing plan to improve sidewalks and create better walkable networks throughout the city.
