Tim Trawick from Greenbrier has been named the 2026 Arkansas Living Treasure by the Arkansas Arts Council. Known for his dedication to preserving the Ozark fiddle-playing style, Trawick has spent over four decades performing, teaching, and advocating for this traditional art form. As a third-generation fiddler, he first learned from his father, who clinched the 1979 Arkansas Old Time State Fiddle Championship, and has passed the craft on to his sons, ensuring the art continues into a fourth generation.
Trawick’s impact reaches far beyond his family, touching hundreds of students across Arkansas and the broader region. His teaching prowess is evident in the numerous accolades his students have amassed, particularly at the Arkansas State Fiddle Championships held at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View. Trawick himself is no stranger to the winner’s circle, having won the senior division in 2017, 2018, and 2022, and taking home the overall prize back in 2007.
The Arkansas Living Treasure Award celebrates masters of traditional crafts or folk arts. Since its inception in 2002, the program has highlighted the contributions of artists who dedicate their lives to preserving cultural heritage. Trawick’s nomination and subsequent recognition underscore his significant contribution to keeping the Ozark fiddling tradition alive and thriving.
For those of us in Northwest Arkansas, this honor resonates deeply. It’s a nod to the cultural tapestry that enriches our communities, where arts and crafts are not just hobbies but reflections of our shared history and identity. With cultural events and festivals, like those hosted at the Ozark Folk Center, it’s clear there’s a strong appetite for traditional arts, and Trawick plays a pivotal role in feeding that enthusiasm.
His recognition as a “Living Treasure” not only honors his past accomplishments but also encourages the ongoing vibrancy of folk traditions in Arkansas. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage amidst the ever-changing landscape of modern entertainment and technology. It’s a testament to how one person’s passion and dedication can ripple outwards, impacting countless others and ensuring that traditions continue to flourish.
