Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders announced Friday that the special election to fill the House District 8 seat vacated by Austin McCollum will take place on November 3, coinciding with the state’s general election. The election will determine who serves the remainder of McCollum’s term, ending January 11, 2027.
McCollum, who represented the district in the 100-member Arkansas House, resigned August 5 following his August 2 arrest on suspicions of aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and domestic abuse against his wife. His arraignment is scheduled for September 8.
Benton County’s Republican Party held a special convention August 14 in Siloam Springs to nominate their candidate. Kara Armas, 47, of Pea Ridge, emerged as the GOP nominee. Armas is well known locally as the wife of Bri Armas, the Pea Ridge High School football coach.
Democrats have announced plans to nominate a candidate to run against Armas, with party officials stating their intention to present a competitive race for the seat. House District 8 covers portions of Benton County, including parts of Bentonville and surrounding communities.
Aligning the special election with the November 3 general election aims to streamline the process and encourage voter turnout amid an already busy election cycle. Voters in the district will see the special election listed alongside other state and federal contests on their ballots.
McCollum’s resignation marked an abrupt end to his tenure in the Arkansas House after allegations emerged against him earlier this month. Prior to his resignation, he served multiple terms and was involved in local legislative initiatives affecting the district and Northwest Arkansas.
The upcoming special election adds uncertainty to the political landscape in Benton County, where shifting demographics and increased voter engagement have made local races more contested in recent years.
