Arkansas Community Foundation launches program to address food insecurity in state

Arkansas Community Foundation and the Walmart Foundation launched the Arkansas Full Table Fund Friday, aiming to put ten million dollars toward food security in the state with grants up to $200,000 available to local organizations.

Local and state leaders gathered at the Springdale Senior Center to break ground on the initiative, which is designed to tackle food insecurity by pairing funding with a network of public agencies, agricultural producers, and corporations. The whole thing rests on an anchor donation from the Walmart Foundation, with additional support coming from Tyson Foods and Cargill.

Honestly, when you look at the numbers, it’s easy to get fired up about this place. Ten million dollars targeted at getting food to people who need it? That is a massive statement. In a major city, you’d see this kind of infrastructure investment look like government red tape; down here, it feels like a community strategy to take care of its own.

Jessica Hughes Ford, president and CEO of the Arkansas Community Foundation, emphasized that this isn’t just about writing checks. Her goal is to get “nonprofit organizations that demonstrate an ability to get food to people who need it most” funded, creating a system that actually changes how hunger is managed across the state.

You’ve got the folks growing the food involved here—Tyson and Cargill are on board—which makes a lot of sense for Arkansas. It connects the supply side directly to the demand side of hunger. Nonprofits looking to expand meal delivery, soup kitchens, or sustainable food systems can apply for the funding, which opens for business on Oct. 1.

This feels like exactly the kind of hustle that keeps Northwest Arkansas moving forward. It solves a problem that hits home for so many families, using local muscle to make it happen.

How to apply: Beginning Oct. 1, Arkansas nonprofit organizations can apply for Arkansas Full Table Fund grants.
