After a quarter-century of volunteer service, the women at the helm of Arkansas’s gay rodeo chapter are retiring

Lisa Smith and Sandy Bidwell, the dynamic duo behind Arkansas’s biannual gay rodeo, are hanging up their hats after this year’s event at the Arkansas State Fairgrounds on April 25-26. These retired Army vets have been the heart and soul of the rodeo for over 25 years, making it a cherished tradition in the LGBTQ+ community.

The gay rodeo, known for its unique blend of traditional rodeo events with a spirited twist, has long been a space where folks can be their authentic selves. Smith and Bidwell’s leadership has turned this event into a haven for inclusion and celebration in a region where such spaces can be rare. Their retirement marks the end of an era, but they’re hopeful that fresh faces will carry on the legacy they’ve built.

Running the rodeo hasn’t just been about organizing bull-riding and barrel racing. It’s been about creating a welcoming community, a place where people can connect and feel seen. Smith and Bidwell have poured their energy and passion into every detail, from coordinating volunteers to wrangling sponsors. Their dedication has been instrumental in keeping the rodeo alive and thriving over the decades.

As they prepare for their final rodeo, Smith and Bidwell aren’t just stepping back; they’re passing the torch. They’ve been actively mentoring the next generation of leaders, ensuring that the rodeo continues to be a vibrant and inclusive event. For those interested in supporting or participating in future rodeos, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and help shape the next chapter.

The Arkansas gay rodeo is more than just an event; it’s a community cornerstone, much like the grants available for nonprofits from the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame Foundation, which also support diverse and inclusive initiatives across the state. As Smith and Bidwell ride off into their well-deserved retirement, they leave behind a legacy of acceptance and joy that’s sure to inspire the next generation.

If you want to be a part of this ongoing tradition, consider reaching out to the rodeo’s organizing committee. Volunteer your time, donate, or simply attend to show your support. The rodeo is a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together, and with your help, it’ll continue to thrive for another 25 years.
