Bentonville placed 38 students on the list of semifinalists for the 72nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program, marking a record high for the city and the largest share of any community in Arkansas. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of more than 16,000 high school seniors nationwide who qualified as semifinalists on Sept. 9.
These semifinalists represent the top performers on the 2025 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), a standardized test taken by juniors across the country. The Bentonville cohort joins other Arkansas students competing for a portion of approximately $24 million in scholarships awarded to high school seniors nationwide.
Nationally, around 6,700 students will receive scholarships. Historically, about 95% of semifinalists advance to finalist status following a detailed application process. This application includes components such as academic records, records of community and school involvement, leadership roles, employment history, and honors. Approximately half of those finalists ultimately earn National Merit Scholarships.
The announcement highlights Bentonville’s continued growth as an educational hub with an increasing number of high-achieving students. The city’s schools have seen a steady rise in academic recognition, reflecting sustained efforts by educators and families in the community. The 38 semifinalists represent a diverse segment of Bentonville’s student body, though detailed demographic data was not provided.
Arkansas as a whole was well represented in this year’s semifinalist list, along with notable contributions from other cities in Northwest Arkansas and across the state. Bentonville’s prominent showing aligns with the city’s expanding school district and investment in rigorous academic programming.
For students like these semifinalists, the National Merit program offers not just scholarship money but recognition that can open doors to selective colleges and universities. The competition is rigorous, with semifinalists already in the top fraction of a percent of high school juniors nationwide based on PSAT scores alone.
The process to progress from semifinalist to finalist requires more than test scores. Students must provide supporting materials that reveal their broader engagement beyond academics — leadership roles in clubs or sports, volunteer service, and honors earned. This holistic review aims to identify well-rounded students prepared for college success.
Bentonville’s record representation in the National Merit program echoes recent educational achievements in the city, paralleling developments in local initiatives aimed at encouraging academic excellence and innovation. It adds to a growing narrative about Northwest Arkansas as a destination not only for commerce but also for families prioritizing education.
Those semifinalists advancing to finalist status will be announced in February. Finalists will then compete for the array of scholarships provided by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which includes corporate-sponsored awards, college-sponsored scholarships, and National Merit $2,500 Scholarships.
This year’s semifinalist cohort is just one indicator of Bentonville’s evolving academic landscape, as the city balances rapid development with investment in student opportunity. For families and educators watching these students prepare for the next stage, the National Merit recognition serves as both a milestone and motivation.
